Guild F-512 Acoustic Electric Guitar Review
The visual impact this jumbo guitar has made, makes me want to get my hands on it and play it for years. So when I was asked to do a Guild F-512 Acoustic Electric Guitar review, I jumped at the chance.
There is something to be said about a vintage twelve string guitar made of solid rose wood on the back and sides. It will definitely overpower your emotions and that is without playing a note. Add a solid Sitka AAA spruce top and the picture is almost complete.
Twenty carefully placed frets adorn the triple mix wooden neck on which Mahogany wood lies on top of maple wood with more mahogany at the bottom. A gorgeous Ebony wood fret board adds that last touch of detail you want in such a design.
Maybe the Grover Gold Plated Die-cast Mini Tuners look impressive, but tuning this guitar with them is a pure pleasure as they fit perfectly without fighting for space.
For tall guys like me, the 25 5/8" scale works like a dream as do the width at the nut of 1-13/16", making the Guild ultra playable.
My first impression of sound usually comes from playing a single strum down open strings and in this case the complex tones filled my ears and heart with pleasure. Playing something mores structured gave a world of respect for our 12 string masters.
The electronics on this classic instrument blew my mind with the amount of thought and sound precision control build into it. Let me start with the D-Tar wavelength Pick up combination with a load and lock battery pre amp that sits with easy quick access. To double the dynamic range, an 18 Volt transducer sits under the saddle powered by two AA batteries. This extra power ads dimension to the sound as hard strumming will not cause distortion that easily.
Getting twelve strings to sound like individuals when put through electronic pick up systems will always be challenging, but on the Guild it just works perfectly. Clever design added two trim pots - one for higher and the second for lower frequency shelving. This allows the player to set the perfect balance between hid bass and treble notes that may otherwise get a bit lost in the massive sound box.
Sitting near the sound hole, the volume and tone control dials gives that sought after final control on the sound you want to put out.
Serious twelve string players will not be able to resist the Guild F-512 Acoustic Electric Guitar, but I have sad news. These instruments very seldom part with their owners making them very scarce and highly collectable.
