Martin D-41 Acoustic Electric Guitar

The Martin D-41 acoustic electric guitar sits in a Martin line like a stately and highly beautiful runway model might stand among her inferiors. This classic 14 fret dreadnought guitar is one of Martin's most stunning instruments. It was recently redesigned but still keeps the original model's traditional beauty, all the while continuing to deliver what's came to be known as the famous "Martin Sound."

This particular guitar is similar in tone a Martin D-45, and has a number of outstanding features that it brings to the table. For example, Martin has included over 100 pieces of hand-inlaid Abalone pearl. All of these pieces have been carefully hand fitted all along the guitar body's top perimeter and the sound hole rosette. The guitar just gets better from there.

The body top is made of the finest spruce while the back and sides are constructed of very nice, high-quality rosewood with the act itself being composed of two pieces. Martin is justifiably famous for its bracing system and this guitar features its best quality scalloped (5/16 inch) set up. Additionally, the guitar has a fingerboard and bridge made in extremely nice ebony.

In total, there are 20 frets with 14 of them being what's known as "in the clear." This means that the other six frets set on the neck down on top of the guitar body's top. As this guitar is a classic dreadnought, there is no cutaway but that will hardly make a difference to those who appreciate quality Martin sound and playability. Also, it will come with a very nice hard shell case if bought new.

The machine heads themselves are Schaller gold models that feature large tuning knobs to ensure that there is no fumbling around or problems with tuning the strings, either in a playing situation or while sitting down to get the guitar into top tuning shape. They hold their tune for basically as long as the player keeps relatively fresh strings on them.

Classically, this Martin will deliver a generally louder and more open tone whenever the strings are plucked or struck. This is because that scalloped bracing system is lighter, which therefore allows the guitar body's topped to vibrate more freely. Most guitar players in the know appreciate the guitar for the very easy way in which it can be played.

Anybody who knows guitars knows that Martin guitars are not cheap, and this is the case with the D-41. And though it isn't the most costly Martin, it will definitely set a serious player back some serious money, to the tune of around $3500. Most would say -- at least those who are serious about their guitars -- that the money would be well spent.
