Martin OMC Artinger Acoustic Electric Guitar
The Martin OMC Artinger acoustic electric guitar is a special model that was built in collaboration with famous guitar maker Matt Artinger of Artinger Custom Guitars. This is quite something, considering that Martin already makes some of the worlds most fabulous guitars and yet it felt comfortable enough to seek out and work with one of the best-known and most highly appreciated custom guitar makers in the business.
The result is the fabulous Martin OMC Artinger guitar that actually led the Martin company to a few firsts. For example, the sound hole on this new Martin is what's called a slanted oval. That new sound hole is matched up with a new side port that works to increase the volume of the sound coming from the guitar while also letting the player get an idea of what a listener in front of him will be hearing.
Additionally, Martin used brushed aluminum fret markers for the first time, a newly designed scalloped nut (the small piece at the top of the neck that the strings fit through prior to going up to the machine heads) and a very nice armrest bevel. All of this is undoubtedly due to the efforts of the company's collaborator in this project.
This outstanding looking single cutaway guitar is probably one of the coolest looking models in the Martin lineup -- which sometimes can look a little staid in appearance, to be honest -- and it's playing capabilities are awesome in all aspects. There are 22 frets in total on the fingerboard, with 14 of them coming after the cutaway. Construction is solid and first rate throughout.
The top is made of solid, high-quality Sitka spruce while the sides rely on solid East Indian Rosewood. This same material is also used on the guitar's back. The machine heads (sometimes called tuners) are proprietary Gotoh models and are chrome plated and die-cast that feature dark ebony tuning knobs. The guitar is not available as a left-hander, so southpaws should beware.
This Martin also comes with a special Artinger-designed Hawaiian Koa wood pickguard that is uniquely shaped. The neck itself is made up of specially selected hardwoods that sit below a solid striped ebony fingerboard and those brushed aluminum frets. The electronics package is made up of Martin's Gold Plus Natural 1 set up. It's first rate in all aspects.
As far as a break from tradition, Martin certainly sought out to write custom guitar maker to help it make such a leap. The Martin OMC Artinger acoustic electric guitar plays everything in an outstanding manner with a supremely confident action. Martin usually retails this guitar at around $4500, but a very nice used model can be had for under $3000. It's well worth the price.
