One Sweet Guitar: Taylor T5 Series Liberty Tree Acoustic Electric Guitar Review
As a collector of Americana and a bit of a picker myself, I was kind of pleased to be asked to provide a Taylor T5 Series Liberty Tree Acoustic Electric Guitar Review.
I was loaned one of these incredible guitars for two weeks to study it, play it and just enjoy it. A well made acoustic guitar like this one is a thing of beauty - so finely crafted that it was hard to do anything but strum it softly the first day. I couldn't bring myself to plug it in til the second day.
The history of the guitar is guaranteed to make it a museum piece one day. The wood was milled from the last standing tulip poplar trees used as a secret meeting place of Colonists plotting to thwart the American Revolution. The small forest, a tribute to independence and freedom, was on the grounds of St. John's College in Maryland. The grove was decimated during a hurricane in 1999. What was left had to be razed due to safety concerns.
Taylor Guitars out of California (I've been on a factory tour - it's awesome) bought all the wood - 80, 000 pounds of it. In 2002, they released 400 Liberty Tree Concert acoustic guitars as a tribute to those who gave their all during the forming of these United States of America. But only 50 T5 series instruments were made, using the last of the salvaged wood - one for each state with a designated number according to when that state entered the union.
This beauty is total red, white and blue. It's got a post-revolution US flag on the peghead, a battle banner on the shoulder and 13 mother-of-pearl stars for each of the first American colonies. The Gotoh tuners have an antique gold finish and the word "Liberty" is etched in that beautiful wood on the back cover panel.
This electric/acoustic hybrid has great pick up - Taylor is known for precision electronics and the T5 has the full package. The tones when you switch to acoustic are just sweet. How the guitar looked was important to them, but how it sounds is really Taylor's number one priority. Releasing the T5 in 2008 was a stroke of genius. If you're ever lucky enough to pick up a Liberty Tree, and hold it in your arms, you'll know why one of these babies goes for $10, 000. Worth every dime.
